Introduction

This Niue legend tells of two birds, the Kulē and the Veka, whose friendship is destroyed because of a dispute over food.

The legend is retold by students of Mana College in Kiribati and English.

Te Kulē ao te Veka

N te bong teuana ao a maeka uoman

One day, they went searching for their food.
They divided banana leaves, taro leaves, and sugar cane between them.
But Kulē ate all the food and left Veka with the leftovers,
so Veka became very angry.

Imwiin aio ao Veka e a ruorikaki

ao mani karina waena inanon te aubunga.

Afterwards, they went down to the sea

and Veka pushed Kulē's leg inside the clam.

Imwiina ao e manga tamarakea te tabuki ao ea moana naba ana anene.

“Waerake taari teutana, kuriko ni waerake taari,

te iabuti rabunna ao tiringa Kule".

Then Veka went to the cliff top and started singing this song.

“Come up high tide, rise quickly.

Rise and cover Kulē and kill him"

E reke bwa unin Kule ngke e tabe ni kaenaenaki iroun

Kulē didn’t like Veka teasing him,

so he chased him into a cave.

A boo niun Veka ao Kule ao imwiin anne ao a itabarara.

Veka and Kulē had a fight, and were never friends again.
