Introduction

This Samoan legend told in Samoan and English tells how a magic seashell helped save a young woman named Masina from a lonely life.

O le atigi figota mamana

I aso la ua leva, sa iai se fafine e igoa i

a Masina, sa nofo toatasi i se motu.

Once upon a time there lived a woman on an island by herself.

Her name was Masina. 

Ao savalivali o ia i le matafaga i se tasi aso,

 na ia mauaina se atigi figota matagofie.

Then one day while she was walking along the beach,

she found a shell. 

Sa agi se afa malosi.

One day a terrible storm came.

Sa o loa tamaiti, ma ave le atigi figota i lo la tama matua.

Sa tuuina e le toeaina le atigi figota i lona taliga, ma ia

faalogoina ai, o tauina le igoa o Masina.

On another island far away, there were two kids

walking along the beach,

they saw a similar shell to Masina’s shell. 

Na faatonuina loa e le toeaina tagata o le nuu e o e saili ia Masina.

Sa latou mauaina Masina, ma aumai loa i lo latou motu.

They gave it to their grandad, and he put it to his ear,

and it said Masina’s name.

So the granddad told the tribe to go look for Masina.   

They found her and brought her back to their village.
