Introduction

Tinirau and Ina

This Cook Island story, told in Cook Island and English,

tells of the relationship between

the ocean god Tinirau

and a young woman Ina.

Kua roa akenei te tuatau te noo ra tetai tamaine ko Ina tona ingoa.

A long time ago there lived a girl named Ina.

She was full of romantic dreams.

Kua kiia aia i te moemoea akainangaro i a Tinirau,

te atua ririnui e akatere ana i te moana.

Ina loved the powerful god

who ruled the ocean,

and his name was Tinirau.

Messengers

Kua tono atu a Tinirau i tona au orooro,

kia akakite atu kia Ina, kia akaruke i tona kopu tangata i Mangaia,

e kia kau atu ki tetai motu 'tapu'.

Then Tinirau sent his messengers

to tell Ina to leave her family from Mangaia

and swim to a sacred island.

te tiake mai nei iaia kia tomo atu.

Once Ina found the sacred island

she saw a house surrounded by bush,

awaiting for her to enter.

Kua rutu aia i te pau e kua aravei atu i a Tinirau.

Ina entered the house to an overwhelming silence. Tinirau wasn’t there.

The whole house was empty apart from a drum.

Then she played the drum and met up with Tinirau.

Kua piri to raua inangaro e kua akaipoipo atu.

They fell in love and got married.

Kua noo ratou ma te mataora e tuatau ua atu.

Then one day out of the blue, a white pigeon flew over the sacred island, saw Ina, 

and then transformed into Ina’s brother Rupe.

Rupe took Ina to her home, to reunite with her family, and they lived happily ever after.
