Introduction

Tinirau and Ina

This Cook Island story, told in Tuvalu and English,

tells of the relationship between

the ocean god Tinirau

and a young woman Ina.

A long time ago there lived a girl named Ina.

She was full of romantic dreams.

Tinirau

A Sina e lasi tena fiafai ki te atua

malosi tela e pule ne ia te tai,

ka ko tena igoa ko Tinilau.

Ina loved the powerful god

who ruled the ocean,

and his name was Tinirau.

Messengers

Ne uga atu ne Tinilau ana avefekau o fakailoa kia Sina

ke tiaki ona kaiga mai Mangaia

kae kau atu ki se motu tapu e tasi.

Then Tinirau sent his messengers

to tell Ina to leave her family from Mangaia

and swim to a sacred island.

kae ko toka foki mo tena ulu atu ki loto.

Once Ina found the sacred island

she saw a house surrounded by bush,

awaiting for her to enter.

E seai ne mea i loto i te fale mai tafa o te tulamu.

Tena ne kini ne ia te tulamu

ko te mea loa ko fetaui a ia mo Tinilau.

Ina entered the house to an overwhelming silence. Tinirau wasn’t there. 

The whole house was empty apart from a drum.

Then she played the drum and met up with Tinirau.

Mai kona ne fiafai laua kae fai foki te la avaga.

They fell in love and got married.

kae i te laveaga ne ia a Sina ne fuli ei ana foliga ki te tuagaene o Sina ko Lupe.

A Lupe ne toe fakafoki ne ia a Sina ki tena fale,

ke toe fetaui mo ona kaiga, kae ne nofo fiafia fakatasi a latou.

Then one day out of the blue, a white pigeon flew over the sacred island,

saw Ina, and then transformed into Ina’s brother Rupe.

Rupe took Ina to her home, to reunite with her family,

and they lived happily ever after.
