Introduction

This story, based on a Fijian legend, tells how the princess' daughter Rani was granted her wish to become a turtle.

The legend is retold by students of Avalon Intermediate School (Years 7 and 8) in Fijian and English.

Once there lived a princess and her daughter Rani.
One day they were far out at a reef, fishing away from their village.
They were sitting there, and Rani hopped up and said,
"I wish I could be a turtle and swim far away to a mystical land, full with silver and gold".

Suddenly a giant boat from far away approached, and it was coming closer.
The princess said, "We have to go now".
When they were leaving, the man got closer and grabbed the princess
and daughter and threatened to kill them.

The warriors pulled them onto a boat. When they were halfway, a storm approached.
Lightning hit the boat fiercely and knocked the two men and two women overboard.
The daughter and the princess turned into turtles, and the two men drowned.

The turtles swam back to their village, Kadavu,
and stayed in the water there so people would visit them in the water.
Then after that they knew Rani got her wish.
