Growing Plants

Kia ora! Find out more about growing plants and what they need.

Learning intentions

In this topic you are learning to:

  • identify and draw the different parts of a flowering plant
  • describe the functions of the main parts of a plant
  • test out your ideas on what plants need in order to grow.

Getting started

Check out these websites about the parts and life cycle of plants to help you achieve the learning intentions.

Observe closely

Think of an indoor or outdoor plant that you can observe and draw. Print off and use the recording sheet for these Predict-Observe-Explain (POE) activities.

  • Predict
  • Observe
    • Draw a 3 cm square in the middle of a page Word icon. or print this page. (Word, 27 KB) .
    • Cut out the square and place the page over an interesting part of your plant. This helps to focus on one small section that you can describe in detail.
    • Look closely through the square. What do you see?
    • Use the recording sheet to draw what you see, while continuing to observe the plant.
  • Explain
    • Look back at your predictions on your recording sheet.
    • Around the border of your page, write down interesting words to describe the shape, size, and colour of your plant.
    • Give three reasons as to why your predictions were correct, incorrect, or partly correct.

Growing up

Helping plants grow is harder than it looks. Try out these science interactives to find out what plants need to stay healthy and alive.

Branch out

Show or tell your friends and teacher what you have learnt from these activities.

My first garden

Have you grown plants in a pot or in a garden? Test what you learned about growing plants by looking after an indoor plant or growing outdoor plants in a garden.

  • Find out information about growing plants outdoors and what these plants need.
  • My garden spot
  • How's my dirt?
  • I'm thirsty
  • Feed me
  • Talk to an adult about how to get started and what plants you could grow. Check the monthly calendar on the GardenGrow website for outdoor vegetables and herbs to grow in pots or your garden.

How I know I have achieved (success criteria)

This is a guide to identify how you have achieved the learning intentions. Ideally, you create your own success criteria at the very beginning of the topic to suit your needs.

I am able to:

  • Identify and draw the different parts of a flowering plant
  • Name 3 different parts of a plant
  • Draw 1 part of plant
  • Describe the functions of the main parts of a plan
  • Explain the purpose of root systems
  • Test out my ideas on what plants need in order to grow
  • Grow my own plant
  • Use the Internet to test my ideas about what plants need.

He aha tāu e kite ai?
  • Whakamahia te whārangi kaute ki te tā i tāu e kite ai, i a koe tonu e tirotiro ana ki te tipu.
  • Whakamārama
    • Tirohia anōtia ō matapae kei runga i tō pepa.
    • Tuhia ētahi kupu whai tikanga ki ngā taha o tō pepa hei whakamārama ake i te āhua,te rahi, me te tae o tō tipu.
    • Kei te tika, kei te hē, kei te āhua tika rānei ō matapae? Tuhia mai ētahi take e toru, he aha i pērā rawa ai.

E tipu ake ana

He uaua kē te āwhina i ngā tipu kia tipu pai ai. Whakamātauria ēnei pāhekohekotanga ā-pūtaiao kia kite ai he aha ngā āhuatanga e hiahiatia ana kia tipu pai ai, kia ora pai ai ngā tipu.

Ka pēhea au e mōhio kua tutuki (paearu angitu)

He arataki tēnei kia mōhio mai koe mēnā kua tutuki i a koe ngā putanga ako. Ko te tikanga, māu anō ōu ake paearu angitu e hanga i te tīmatanga o te kaupapa ki tāu e hiahia ana.

Ka taea e au:
