Pets and vets

Join us as we find out about pets and vets.

Ed, Wiki and Tipani have two new pets, a dog and a cat. Pets can be wonderful company. We need to make sure that we can look after them properly.

Learning outcomes

When you do these activities you will learn to:

  • Consider the things pets need e.g. grooming, food, care
  • Being safe around pets
  • Find out about people who look after pets
  • Write poetry and stories about pets
  • Design a comfortable shelter for a pet
  • Have fun.

A pet for your classroom

Choose one of the pets from the list below:

  • Axolotis
  • Birds
  • Fieldcrickets
  • Goldfish
  • Guinea pigs
  • Mice
  • Rabbits
  • Rats
  • Slaters
  • Snails
  • Terrapins
  • Worms

Pick two of the pets from the list and decide which would be the most suitable pet for your centre or classroom. Use the information given for each pet about housing, caring for your pet, and interesting facts to help you make a decision. You need to think about the cost of housing and feeding your pet, and what you need to do to look after it.

  • Pet -
    • type of animal
  • Housing -
    • set up cost
  • Feeding -
    • ongoing costs
  • Caring -

    • how often
    • by who?
  • Make a ‘How to care for....’ booklet for the pet you choose.
  • Draw a picture of the house you are going to build, for your pet.
  • Draw a picture of your pet, name it and tell us why you gave it the name you did.

What am I?

Haiku poems came from Japan. They usually have 3 lines with 5 syllables (beats) in the first line, 7 in the second line and 5 in the third line. They are often about nature. What do you think this haiku is about?

"Green legs, croaky voice
Lies in sun on lily pads
Bulging, watching eyes".

Buy a budgie

Wiki is thinking about getting a budgie for a pet. Help her decide what to get. Buy a budgie and the things you need to look after it. Keep track of what you spend and you will get some free seed!

Safety with pets

Read Charlie’s Dog Safety Tips for Kids and watch the Stay Dog Safe video, then do the Dog Safety Quiz.

  • Make up some rules about cat (other pet) safety and a quiz about or another pet.
  • Cats like smell, sound and movement. Find out what smells and sounds they like and design a toy with all three things that will keep your cat busy when you aren’t there.
  • Design an indoor play area for a cat using recycled materials.
  • Find out why cats love to scratch. Design a scratching post for a cat using recycled materials.

  • Make a list of all the tasks you can find that a vet may do.
  • Write down all of the places where a vet can work.
  • Have you ever wondered what is needed to become a vet? Write down three questions you’d like to know and send them to Ed – we’ll ask a vet to answer them for you.

Describe your pets

  • Write a short description telling what you do to look after your pet.
